Bob Opsahl

I have been a member of the Eyewitness News Team since joining WFTV in 1978 as a general assignment reporter. Since the mid-eighties, I have co-anchored the 5:00, 5:30, 6:00 and 11:00pm newscasts.

I was born in Minneapolis and grew up in an Air Force family. I settled in Central Florida in 1968 and served for four years in the U.S. Navy. It was in the Navy that I became interested in broadcasting. As a communications technician aboard a Navy oiler, I was in charge of repairing the ship's communications systems, gyrocompasses and alarm systems. When we were at sea, I also functioned as the ship's disc jockey--fulfilling music requests from other members of the crew.

In 1976, I graduated from the University of Central Florida. Since 1982, I have been doing a weekly segment called Wednesday's Child which seeks to find adoptive homes for special needs children. To date, more than 500 of those children have found new homes after appearing on the segment. In 1992, UCF presented me with their Distinguished Alumnus Award.

I am a fitness buff and enjoy tennis, biking, hang-gliding, snorkeling and playing golf. Another of my hobbies is audio recording and production. I dream of becoming a stand-up comic, a professional tennis player or a rock star. (Just kidding about the comic and rock star.)
