Discovery, Toilet Parts Arrive Monday

Space Shuttle To Deliver Lab, Crewmember

Updated: 6:02 pm EDT June 2, 2008

Space shuttle Discovery arrived at the international space station Monday after performing a slow back flip for inspection.

Now the hard work begins. The crew is delivering a bus-sized Japanese science lab called Kibo that will be added to the facility. The crew also brought a spare pump to repair the only on-board toilet, which broke nearly two weeks ago.

Astronaut Gregory Chamitoff now begins a six-month stay aboard the space station. He'll replace Garrett Reisman, who has been on board since March.

Also moving in for a half-year is a 12-inch Disney action figure -- Buzz Lightyear, the character who always yearned to blast off "to infinity and beyond." He finally got his wish.

The flip is part of a routine inspection of the shuttle's heat shield. About five pieces of insulating foam broke off Discovery's external fuel tank during Saturday's liftoff, and one or two of them may have hit the shuttle.

NASA officials said they were not too worried about damage because the foam losses occurred after the crucial first two minutes of the flight, and the fragments appeared to be thin and flimsy.

Mission plans include a nine-day stay at the station and three space walks. The first is set for 11:32 a.m. EDT Tuesday.
