Sharapova Withdraws From Olympics

POSTED: 9:52 pm EDT July 31, 2008

(Sports Network) - Russian Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the Olympic tennis competition due to torn tendons in her shoulder.

Sharapova injured her right shoulder Wednesday night during her second-round match with Poland's Marta Domachowska at the Rogers Cup tennis event, a match in which Sharapova double-faulted 17 times.

A day later, Sharapova posted a message on her personal Web site.

"After yesterday's match I knew there was something seriously wrong with my shoulder," she said. "After taking a few different exams and MRIs this morning, the doctors found two small tears in the tendons of my shoulder.

"There are so many mixed feelings because last night they were almost positive there was something wrong with my nerve which could have ultimately been much more serious but after the tests this morning, for the first time in a while, they were able to give me a different answer and a different problem. But on the other hand this is something that needs a lot of time to heal, which really hurts me to say that I have to miss the Olympics."

Sharapova said she was going to New York for a second opinion, but called the timing of the injury "unfortunate."

The 21-year-old is a winner of three tournaments this year, including the Australian Open, when she collected her third Grand Slam singles title.

The tennis portion of the '08 Games will be staged from August 10-17 on hardcourts at Beijing's new Olympic Tennis Center.
