Montreal, QC -- (Sports Network) - Dinara Safina of Russia routed Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova to win the $1.34 million Rogers Cup on Sunday. The seventh-seeded Safina, who posted a tense victory over Belarussian opponent and 11th-seeded Victoria Azarenka in the semis, topped the unranked Cibulkova, 6-2, 6-1, to win her third WTA title of the year and the eighth of her career. "I think my experience helped me a bit in the final; I'm sure Dominika's time will come soon," Safina said. "It's the first time in my life I've won back- to-back tournaments. I used to win a tournament then lose first round the next week. But now I'm always just taking it one match at a time. It's a new experience for me and really just amazing." The match marked the first ever meeting between the two foes with Safina collecting $196,900 for her victorious effort. The Russian cruised through the first semifinal set on Saturday in mere minutes before a complete turnaround in the second stanza. However, the lanky 22-year-old recovered nicely to eventually punch her ticket to Sunday's final with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 win. Safina defeated fellow Russian and last year's U.S. Open runner-up Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 Friday. Cibulkova, who fell short of her first career WTA title, squared off in an epic semifinal contest with French 10th-seed Marion Bartoli and emerged victorious in a three-setter delayed twice by weather. After Bartoli took the nearly one-hour first set by a 6-4 count, play was suspended by rain for another hour. Cibulkova then took a 2-1 edge in the second before the deluge halted play once again. Play did not resume until well after 9 p.m. and saw Cibulkova fall behind 4-3 only to record the final three points of the set. The 19-year-old then wrote her ticket into the final by easing to a 6-3 decision in the final set, completing a match whose playing time went almost two hours, 45 minutes. Cibulkova had posted a surprise straight-set 7-5, 6-2 victory over top-ranked Jelena Jankovic Friday.
