Los Angeles, CA -- (Sports Network) - Tommy Haas made a quick, first-round exit, while fellow seeded players Marat Safin and Carlos Moya advanced to the second round at the $475,000 Countrywide Classic tennis event on Tuesday.American Donald Young ousted Haas, the No. 8 seed from Germany, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4 on the hardcourts at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Haas was a two-time champ here in 2004 and 2006, but is now on the outside looking in for the remainder of the tournament. Moya, the No. 7 seed, needed three sets and a tiebreaker to overcome scrappy Xavier Malisse of Belgium, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5). In other matches involving Americans, Wayne Odesnik outlasted compatriot Bobby Reynolds 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, while Vincent Spadea beat Sebastien Grosjean of France 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, and Amer Delic upended Israel's Dudi Sela, 6-4, 6-4. Sam Warburg wasn't as fortunate as his countrymen, however, falling to the hands of Dusan Vemic of Serbia 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. One other bout saw Italian qualifier Andrea Stoppini stop Russian Igor Kunitsyn 6-1, 6-3. This week's top seed is American star Andy Roddick. The 2008 Countrywide winner will collect $79,000.
