Witnesses try to save driver after truck crashes into Port Orange retention pond

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — One person was killed after a truck drove off the road and into a retention pond Friday in Port Orange, police said.

Bystanders said they were scrambling to try to rescue the driver. One man said he tried to free a person trapped inside.

Cory, who only gave his first name, said he and his friends heard the crash on Nova Road and dove in the water to try to free the person inside, but they could not get the driver out.

“We were trying to cut the seat belt and everything and get her out,” he said. “We tried.”

The truck had been sitting at the bottom of the Port Orange retention pond for close to 90 minutes.

“I could only do what I could. I tried," he said. “The doors weren’t opening. So all I could do was go underwater and do what I could to pry the doors open.”

Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The name of the victim has not been released.
