Alabama inmate who used peanut butter to escape captured in Florida

Update: Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said that a tip from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office that led investigators to the "quiet neighborhood" north of Tequesta where a wanted fugitive was hiding Tuesday evening.

Snyder, whose press conference was streamed live on the sheriff’s Facebook page, said Brady Kilpatrick has been cooperative and knows he was caught and. When investigators searched the neighborhood, they found found a car outside of the house with an Alabama tag.

The sheriff said two people from Martin County knew Kilpatrick, drove to Alabama after his escape and picked him up. He when they got into the home near Tequesta, Kilpatrick’s sister, his sister’s fiancé and a friend of the family. He said they’re still trying to figure out who exactly picked him up.

Three people have been arrested and possibly more will be arrested in time.

Kilpatrick will be booked into the Martin County jail where he will make his first appearance Wednesday. There, he will be asked if he agrees to be extradited back to Alabama, Snyder said.

Kilpatrick allegedly told authorities that when he escaped Alabama, he ran for two hours as the others were caught one by one.

“He just picked the wrong county to come and hide out in,” Snyder said.

Snyder was asked if he’s worried about Kilpatrick escaping Martin County’s jail, but said he wasn’t too worried.

“I don’t like to brag, but we’ve never had any escape from the Martin County jail,” he said. “I can tell you this: He’s not getting peanut butter.”

The last of 12 inmates to escape an Alabama prison by using peanut butter to distract a guard was caught in Martin County, Florida, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Brady Kilpatrick, 24, was tracked down by the Sheriff’s Office, FBI Violent Crimes Task Force and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Tactical Unit. Kilpatrick was the only one to make it out of Walker County in Alabama, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Kilpatrick was one of a dozen other inmates who escaped the prison Sunday by smearing peanut butter to cover a door number. The guard who opened the door remotely, thought the door was a cell door and not an exit door which led outside, according to reports. The 12 inmates scaled a 12-foot fence and ran.

It’s unclear if Kilpatrick has any ties to South Florida or how law enforcement tracked him to Martin County..
