Some concerned about weapon theft during gun show at Central Florida Fairgrounds

Gun show theft 2015

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Gun enthusiasts will be making their way to the Central Florida Fairgrounds this weekend to see hundreds of weapons on display.

Orlando City Commissioner Regina Hill said for her, the gun shows are a concern.
She said residents on Mercy Drive have told her that sometimes guns stolen from the show wind up in their neighborhood.

“I am concerned, not as a city, this is Commissioner Hill saying that storing guns anywhere is an issue,” she said. “I don’t want 10-year-olds, 12-year-olds, 15-year-olds carrying guns.”

In 2015, about a dozen young men stormed the fairgrounds late at night and stole weapons.

Orlando police said a break-in theft is rare, but they do often take stolen-gun reports from the shows.

Loaded guns are not allowed inside the show, so some leave guns and ammunition in their cars, making their vehicles a target for thieves.

One man’s car window was smashed and 100 rounds of ammunition was stolen.

A spokesperson for the Fairgrounds said there will be a local and federal law enforcement presence at the show, both in uniform and under cover.

This year, the Fairgounds is offering a parking service for visitors to the show, which they hope it hopes will cut down on any issues.
