Residents Think Small Tornado To Blame For Storm Damage

Posted: 4:47 pm EDT April 8, 2004Updated: 5:26 pm EDT April 8, 2004

Storms, Thursday, did damage to homes near Highway 11 and Reynolds Road in western Volusia County. Residents have little doubt that it was, indeed, a small tornado that ripped through their neighborhood on Thursday afternoon.

The storm damaged four homes and knocked down countless trees, limbs, power lines and fences.

A section of roof from Gerald and Carmen Aponte's home was torn off and ended caught up in a tree while tiles were scattered all the way to the road. Their antenna was snapped at the base and, sadly, several of their pet birds were killed in the storm.

Just across the street, the storm took out an old oak tree in the front yard and destroyed a horse shed. Supports and fences for ferneries were ripped out by the wind.

Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries. A lot of people were home at the time of the storm.

Still, though, for residents it is very upsetting. "Yes, I was in town and came home to find this all like this. [It's] shocking, scary to see it all," says resident Claudine Lungren.

Work is underway as crews try to clean up and electricity is restored. Regardless, it's a big mess that will take quite some time to recover from.

Detailed Forecast

Matt Makens
The latest forecast from Severe Weather Center 9 Meteorologist Matt Makens.
Meteorologist Profile

The breezy conditions will stay with us and turn windier as Ida approaches us this week. Ida will move into the northern Gulf of Mexico Monday and Tuesday where she will meet with a cold front diving south, causing her to lose her tropical characteristics, but could still bring strong to severe thunderstorms into our area. What's for sure is this does mean windy conditions, a good chance of rain, followed by cooler weather, and do keep on eye on the forecast for updates to the severity of weather the combined system will bring.

Tonight: Partly cloudy and staying breezy, speeds of 10-20 mph. Early morning temperatures will be in the upper 60s and low 70s.

Monday: Windy conditions, 15-30mph, causing rough seas and dangerous beach conditions. Otherwise, partly cloudy with an isolated shower or thunderstorm. Highs will return to the lower 80s.
