Rain causes flooding concern for Seminole County residents living around Lake Harney

Nearly a month after Hurricane Irma, residents living around Lake Harney in Seminole County continue to worry about flooding as rain showers cause the water to rise again.
Geneva residents like Gayle Hankins say they feel like they just can’t catch a break from the weather.
“We can’t,” she said. “We are hoping for better weather.”
Hankins and her husband were busy Thursday putting sandbags down in their backyard in an attempt to keep the rising waters at bay.
“We’ve done that this morning,” Hankins said. “We filled about 30 (sandbags) and then my husband went back and filled many, many more.”
According to the rain gauge at their home, about 1.5 inches of rain has fallen since Wednesday night.
Floodwaters had started to recede, but rain from last weekend and during the last couple days have caused it to rise again, Hankins said.
“It did start to dissipate until Sunday, and then I think we started to get the flow from the Melbourne area our way, and, of course, the system moved in, so it’s been nonstop rain and just bashing us pretty much to pieces,” she said.
So far, Hankins and her husband have been able to keep the water out of their home, but their dock was smashed to pieces by the storm.
They plan to do whatever they need to in order to keep their home dry.
