Storm damage in Grant-Valkaria after tornado tracks through nearby Barefoot Bay

CENTRAL FLORIDA — A tornado was confirmed in south Brevard County just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service said.

While there was no damage reported to Barefoot Bay as the tornado tracked through, the storms severely damaged the roof of a home in nearby Grant, said Brevard County official, Don Walker.

Earlier, wind gusts up to 55 miles per hour had been reported in New Smyrna Beach and Port Canaveral saw wind gusts at 47 miles per hour.

The storms also ripped a roof off a home in Edgewater earlier in the day. Rainfall totals have already reached more than 4.5 inches in parts of Melbourne, now nearing a record for Tuesday’s date.

All of the rain was due to a tropical low tracking up the east Florida coast. Channel 9’s meteorologists watched throughout the night until it became a tropical system by 11 p.m.. Due to that system, more showers and storms continued into the evening.

Heavy showers produced an additional 1 to 3 inches of rainfall in some areas. Areas where showers become more persistent could see minor flooding.

Severe Weather Center 9’s team of meteorologists will be monitoring the evolution of the system and will be tracking the showers on all of digital platforms throughout the evening.
