Storms get an early start over Central Florida

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — While many Floridians say, “You can set your watch to 3 o’clock by the daily afternoon storms in the summertime,” storms in Central Florida started much earlier than normal this Wednesday.

The first storms in Central Florida started developing over Sumter and Marion Counties as early as 11 a.m. The storms then pushed into Lake County by 1 p.m. and then moved through Tavares with lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds.

Channel 9’s Myrt Price took video from Tavares as the storms arrived. The storms kicked up the winds and dropped more than an inch of rain.

While this storm was tracking through Lake County, the Orlando Metro was still dry. A few more scattered storms will develop and pass later Wednesday afternoon.

Some of the most widespread rain into the evening will be expected along the beaches, from Flagler to Volusia to Brevard Counties.

Watch for lightning if outside Wednesday afternoon and take cover when there is thunder nearby. Scattered rain and lightning will likely linger into the evening in some locations.
