Senators tour Central Florida ravaged by Hurricane Matthew

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Sens. Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio flew with the U.S. Coast Guard to view the damage of A1A, and the east coast of Florida caused by Hurricane Matthew.

After seeing the damage, Nelson said Central Florida dodged a bullet.

Nelson said the damaged businesses along A1A is one of the worst spots.

“There were some of the stores right along A1A that had been roughed up a good bit,” Nelson said. “Parts of Flagler County had undercut A1A and you can see where it had fallen in.”

The senator said besides insurance, there's help for property owners.

“Whenever people need assistance, it's there because Federal Emergency Management Agency is in place,” Nelson said.

Rubio stayed in the plane and did not talk to Eyewitness News about the damage he saw.

Nelson said Rubio told him he was going back to Miami.
