A Sold Out Mile High Stadium

Previous Posts

By Jamie Dupree

As Barack Obama accepts his party's nomination tonight, there is some risk involved, as Democrats moved the last night's activities from the convention hall used the first three nights in Denver to the NFL football stadium just down the street.

It's not really the weather that I would be worried about - though a nasty batch of afternoon thunderstorms could put Mr. Obama in Acceptance Speech Limbo.

Maybe the concern is sort of along the lines of, "Is he biting off more than he can chew?"

We all know that Barack Obama is one hell of a public speaker.  I've seen him entertain huge crowds in this election year, the biggest was in an outdoor setting in Indianapolis, the night before Hillary Clinton narrowly won the primary in the Hoosier State in May.

This actually won't be the biggest crowd he has played to.  I think that came in Philadelphia if I remember correctly.  Oh, and he lost that primary too.

This is going to be more of a "show" than a political rally I would suspect.  But if it gets too slick, if it gets too Hollywood, then you never know how it will be seen by the voting public.

What does Obama need to do on a political level?  He probably needs to give one of his good speeches with soaring rhetoric and he will do okay.

But if everyone is distracted by the "Greek Temple" stage that has been set up, then there is the risk of mockery, the risk of him being characterized as a show horse.

One of the biggest problems right now is the demand for seats.  Earlier this week, I had one state party chairman tell me that he had been promised 200 tickets, so that delegates could take their families to the event.

Then when he arrived in Denver on Saturday, he was told that he could get 30 tickets, which was less than the number of delegates from that state.

If stuff like that doesn't get worked out, then you can imagine the flammable combination of journalists looking for stories and some poor person who gets locked out of Mile High.

I have a special pass that will get me in there.  We'll see if it is worth the show or not.

With apologies to Brent Musberger...."You are looking live at a sold out Mile High Stadium, where today we prepare for a confrontation..."
