The Never Ending Democratic Race

By Jamie Dupree

Maybe, just maybe, the final two primaries one week from today on June 3 will bring this Democratic race to an end.  Then again, maybe not.

As Bill Clinton set off another storm of headlines Monday after saying that Barack Obama will lose the general election to John McCain, while his wife won't, I prefer to focus on when exactly Obama is going to finally win the Democratic nomination.

Obama kept creeping closer and closer to his magic number to grab that "official" tag over the Memorial Day weekend, but he still hasn't closed the deal.

At this point, depending on who is doing the count, Obama is about 50 delegates, or just under 50 away from being The Nominee.

"COUNTDOWN TO THE NOMINATION: 49 delegates to go," read the headline of an email sent out on Memorial Day by Team Obama, as they detailed how many superdelegates they got over the weekend, including a few more John Edwards pledged delegates.

For those keeping score at home, here are their numbers:

"The Math

Total Pledged Delegates: 3,253

Pledged Delegates needed for majority: 1,627

Total delegates needed for nomination: 2026

Edwards pledged delegates now supporting Obama: 11

Obama Pledged Delegates: 1,648.5 (21.5 more than needed for the majority)

Obama Superdelegates: 317.5

Obama Total Delegates: 1,977

Number of delegates Obama needs to secure the nomination: 49"

Once again, I sort of have to chuckle at all the people who say that Hillary Clinton should drop out of the race.  Yes, she has very little chance to win, but then again, the other guy seems to be taking forever to lock the darn thing up.

Basically, the superdelegates could have ended this last week or even last month.  But most of them are waiting until June 3rd is over, and then maybe some of them will jump off the fence.

Luckily for Obama, he may have just enough delegates to clinch this race next week.  Let's say Clinton had another 75 or so, then this thing might have dragged on for weeks.

As for Clinton, she spent her three day weekend in Puerto Rico, which votes next Sunday.  Today she's back to focusing on the final two states, as she starts a two day swing in Montana and South Dakota.

Oh, the folks out at KOTA Territory News must be going nuts about now.
