It Won't Be Liberation-Gate

By Jamie Dupree

One thing that email has done is make the back and forth of the presidential campaign even speedier, which must be why my Blackberry battery is shot by 2 pm every day.

One of the many examples came on Tuesday, as the Republican National Committee grabbed onto news reports that questioned the accuracy of a family story told by Barack Obama on the campaign trail.

"Recollection of Obama Uncle's War Service Missing Key Details," said the release, which was followed straight away by another RNC missive.

"RNC STATEMENT ON OBAMA'S FALSE CLAIM," thundered the headline.

"Barack Obama's dubious claim is inconsistent with world history and demands an explanation," said RNC spokesman Alex Conant .

"It was Soviet troops that liberated Auschwitz, so unless his uncle was serving in the Red Army, there's no way Obama's statement yesterday can be true," added Conant.

Not more than 30 minutes later came the electronic reply of Team Obama.

"Facts on Obama's Great Uncle Who Served in WWII," was the headline, as Obama spokesman Bill Burton gave reporters the campaign's version.

"Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically," said Burton.

The issue had come up on Monday, when Obama spoke with veterans during a campaign stop in New Mexico.  There, he told the story of his great uncle Charlie Payne.

"I had an uncle who was part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps," Obama said.   "The story in our family was that when he came home, he just went up into the attic and he didn't leave the house for six months."

For a brief moment, it looked like a story, but once the Obama people said the candidate meant Buchenwald instead of Auschwitz, the controversy trailed away.  No more emails, no more zingers.

The only excitement was Hillary Clinton's camp announcing that they nabbed another delegate, this one from the Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, my blackberry seemed happy while getting a charge from the wall socket.
