More Tax Mistakes

By Jamie Dupree

Yet another high profile nominee of President Obama has been forced to amend tax returns and pay back taxes to Uncle Sam.

The latest is Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who is Obama's nominee for Health and Human Services Secretary.

She amended her returns - after they were reviewed by a hired accountant - which resulted in three years of amended returns and paid almost $8,000 in back taxes and interest.

They were characterized as "unintentional errors.

This news again begs the question - "Can't anyone of these Obama nominees do their taxes right?"

So what were the errors?

Some letters backing up charitable contributions in excess of $250 couldn't be found; there was a discrepancy involving a mortgage interest deduction; and a lack of documentation for some business related expenses.

In other words, chump change stuff. But mistakes on taxes are mistakes.

Sebelius didn't fess up to the tax issues during a hearing before the Senate Health Committee on Tuesday.  Instead, it rolled out to the media during dinnertime.

Wouldn't a simpler tax system make sense at this point in time?

The answer is, of course it would. But both parties have too much skin in the game in the current system.
