Obama & Afghanistan

Previous Posts

By Jamie Dupree

I would bet that most Americans who voted in 2008 for Barack Obama didn't think that he would go into office and send thousands more U.S. troops to Afghanistan in his first year in office.  But that's where this White House is headed.

Regardless of whether the correct decision would be right now for the President, the Obama White House could well have some very angry Democrats beating down the doors this week.

More liberal lawmakers in the Congress made lots of noise in recent years that the Bush Administration was wasting money and the lives of young servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan.

And now "their" President is making decisions which will most certainly extend the duration of the war against Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

Against that backdrop, I nearly sent Coca-Cola surging through my nose over the weekend when I saw a headline from foxnews.com - "Liberals Vow to 'Spank' Obama for Sending More Troops to Afghanistan."

(No word on who will get to bend the occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue over his or her knee.)

As for Mr. Obama, he will meet with Congressional leaders on Tuesday before flying up to West Point (yes, that West Point), where he will give a speech on his Afghan decision.

As of this writing on Sunday night, there still aren't many real details out in the press about what decision has been made by the President.

But back to my original point - most of the Democrats who voted for Obama were not voting to spend more money on troop deployments in Afghanistan.

But that's what they're most likely going to get this week.
