No Health Amendments?

At the end of a Friday morning news conference on health care reform, Speaker Nancy Pelosi raised the possibility of not allowing any amendments to be offered on the House floor to the Democratic health care bill.  Pelosi was asked by a reporter about abortion and health care reform, as a group of anti-abortion Democrats led by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI) want to tighten language on federal money going to abortion servies.

While she didn't really answer that specific question, Pelosi did leave open the option of allowing no amendments during the House floor debate on health reform:

"We're just finishing our policy on this legislation, we haven't even gone into the procedure as to what will be on the floor, if there even are any amendments on the floor," the Speaker said.

The number of amendments or alternatives will be up to Pelosi and other Democratic leaders, as unlike in the Senate, the House can strictly control that part of the debate.
