Unusually dry September weather

By Brian Monahan

Good evening! An usually dry stretch of mid-September weather has moved into central Florida; in fact, our rain chances are about as low as they get through at least Wednesday afternoon. The chance of rain will increase only slightly as we move into the end of the week, with a 10% chance Thursday and a 20% chance on Friday. Most likely, though, we’re waiting until a deep easterly flow develops this weekend for the return of rain across the area.

Drier air means low dewpoint temperatures — a measure of moisture in the atmosphere. Monday afternoon, dewpoints were down in the 50s and low 60s across the area; this is exceptionally dry for this time of year! The lower the dewpoint, generally, the lower the temperature gets at night. With such dry air in place, expect temperatures to drop into the lower 60s across our northwest tier with lows into the upper 60s even into metro Orlando. In fact, a low in the upper 60s tonight would mark the first time Orlando’s been below 70 degrees since the first week of June!

Each afternoon will be hot, though, even with the low humidity. Dry air actually heats more efficiently than the humid, sticky air we have during the summer. Average highs this time of year are near 90 degrees; we’ll be easily into the lower 90s through Thursday.

Have a great night!

Brian Monahan
