What a difference the sun makes!

By Tom Terry

During the change of seasons, we'll get either a stronger cold front with a marked temperature drop of 10 degrees or more, or a relatively weak front that lacks the cold air support of the jet stream and comes through without much fanfare. But what if a weak front pulls in clouds with it? The result can equal or exceed the impacts of a stronger front. This scenario has happened a few times already this Fall, most recently behind a front that kept central Florida cooler on November 28th. But, it was a mixed bag, depending on the amount of sun the filtered through. Some areas under the cloud deck struggled to get into the 60s, while others with only a few hours of sun made it into the 70s. The amount and duration of cloud formation behind fronts is a real forecasting challenge and a subtle change here and there will make a huge difference in the day's outcome.
