October Begins on a Stormy Note

While you were sleeping, the calendar page turned from September to October but it certainly doesn't feel like we're deeper into the fall quite yet! A large storm system is stalled over the central Gulf coast and this is drawing plenty of tropical moisture northward into central Florida. Bands of showers and storms developed by midday Monday and moved over the same areas throughout the afternoon, especially along the coast where storms had a little bit of extra energy because of the sea breeze. More than an inch of rain fell in some neighborhoods, with the high water mark -- so to speak -- more than 1.5" in St. Cloud.

As the big storm and its attached front stalls over the eastern Gulf tomorrow, the deepest tropical moisture will actually shift just to our east. This means that, overall, we'll have a slightly lower chance of storms on Tuesday as the coverage of rain drops to 40%. The highest chances will be across our eastern counties. By Wednesday, the Bermuda high -- yes, the summer-time Bermuda high! -- builds back to the west shifting the band of moisture back over central Florida. You can expect more showers and storms Wednesday before the band of moisture again shifts to the north of the area on Thursday with drier air moving in.

Where's Fall?  It certainly doesn't feel like fall as October starts but there are signs that a big cool down is on the way for next week. Unseasonably cold air will move south with a front over the northern US later this week and, eventually, drop into the southeast after this weekend. There is a chance that parts of the northeast will even see snowflakes by the weekend! It'll take some time, but a part of that chillier air will get a chance to move into the area in about 7-9 days.

Have a great night!
