Marion County parents doing virtual learning having second thoughts, requesting face-to-face learning

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Some Marion County parents who chose to keep their children home instead of doing face-to-face learning are having second thoughts days into the school year.

Marion County school leaders said in some cases it’s too late for the change of heart.

“We actually gave them three different deadlines, if you want to look at them as deadlines: July 15, July 27 and then August 21. Because our schools had to have some kind of definitive date so they could start and complete student schedules and teacher assignments,” Kevin Christian, director of public relations for the district, said.

As of Wednesday, 70% of the district’s students are doing face-to-face learning.

“We have been approached by parents who want to make changes primarily coming back to brick and mortar for days now,” Christian said. “We’re trying to accommodate as many of those as we can. But at the same time realize that at some schools it is literally, I don’t want to say too late, they’re going to have to wait till this two-week period is over.”

Monday is the day that the district said it will allow parents to switch their learning option.

School officials said they will always try to work with parents, but the district is asking parents to make a commitment for the learning option they choose for the full nine-week semester.
