JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Some Florida families might be running into alligators more often in the near future.
A team of scientists and students at the University of North Florida are the first studying alligators in urban environments.

Adam Rosenblatt, assistant professor of Biology, observed alligator populations across nine tributaries of the St. Johns River over the past year.
He said they found almost none of the adult-sized reptiles in Jacksonville because they’ve been removed by hunters and nuisance trappers.
Researchers say their next steps are studying how the dredging projects in the St. John’s River affects the distribution of alligators throughout Jacksonville.
