2 dead after SUV collides with train in Polk County

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Two people died after a train collided with their SUV just before midnight Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP said the SUV did not stop when the lighted crossing gates were activated to warn drivers of an approaching train on Ewell Road near State Road 37.

Troopers said the train blew its horn, but the SUV traveled into the train’s path and was hit.

FHP said as a result of the impact, the SUV was thrown off the tracks and into a control box, where the SUV caught fire.

The two people inside the SUV were killed. Their names were not released.
