Home invasion could be result of mistaken identity, police say

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A Melbourne man who was the victim of a home invasion Thursday had moved into his apartment the day before and police believe the suspects were looking for someone else.

When the three men kicked in the door, they shouted, “Where’s the weed?” leading investigators to believe the victim was not the target.

Officers had been called to the apartment before.

The incident happened at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday when the men kicked in the door of the Babcock Street apartment, demanded drugs and then stole the tenant's wallet, keys and then his 2o13 Volkswagen Jetta

Investigators said the men were pursued by police into Brevard County, driving up to about 130 miles per hour and, at times, in the wrong direction.

The men ditched the car on the Pineda Causeway and ran in to the woods, authorities said.

Law enforcement set up a perimeter and used K-9s in the search for the men.

The suspects were still at large Thursday afternoon.
