9 things happening next week: COVID-19 vaccine events, job fairs and more

ORLANDO, Fla. — Looking ahead, there are several events happening next week, including COVID-19 vaccine appointments and a job fair in Orlando.

Here’s are nine things happening next week:

1. Publix to open COVID-19 vaccine appointments

Mark your calendar: Publix will open appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine on Jan. 27.

In Central Florida, Publix stores in Marion, Flagler, Brevard and Volusia counties are offering the vaccine.

To receive a vaccine, people must be 65 or older, be a health care worker or live or work in a long-term care facility.

People will also have to prove they are a Florida resident.

2. Volusia County to hold COVID-19 vaccine event

Volusia County Emergency Management

Volusia County will hold a COVID-19 vaccination event for people who are 65 and older on Monday.

The site will operate as a drive-up site and pre-registration was required.

The appointments were booked on Jan. 20.

The site will offer the Moderna vaccine.

3. Orange County Mayor’s Job Fair

The 20th annual Mayor’s Job Fair is will be held on Jan. 27.

The job fair honors Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings and it will offer several career opportunities in different industries.

It will run from noon to 4 p.m. at the Central Florida Fair Exposition Park.

4. Lake Mary to host annual Shred-A-Thon

Lake Mary will host its annual Shred-A-Thon Saturday, Jan. 30.

The event is contactless and will allow residents to shred all their unwanted paperwork.

It will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 660 Century Point.

5. Jurassic Quest drive-thru experience comes to Orlando

Are you ready for some “roar-some” family fun? The Jurassic Quest drive-thru experience is coming to Orlando on Jan. 29.

More than 70 photorealistic dinosaurs are ready and raring to return from extinction to invade the Orange County Convention Center from Jan. 29 to Feb. 7.

6. Pirate and Princess weekends begin at Gaylord Palms

Shiver me timbers! Gaylord Palms announced that Pirate and Princess weekends have begun.

The event features a wide array of family-friendly activities every weekend through March 7.

Organizers said the events include a new show called Pirate Outpost Invasion, a pirate speakeasy and a princess academy.

Children can also join the Adventure Kids, a club that “explores the natural world we live in.”

There will also be a pirate pool party, where guests can “join Jolly Roger and his pirate crew for music, games and swashbuckling fun at Cypress Springs Water Park.”

7. SeaWorld to host Sesame Street Kids’ Weekend, Elmo’s birthday celebration

SeaWorld Orlando will host Sesame Street Kids’ Weekend Jan. 23-24 and Elmo’s birthday celebration from Jan. 30 through Feb. 3.

The event is located in Sesame Street Land and it is included with park admission.

8. Ocala to host ceremony for Mary Sue Rich Community Center at Reed Place

The city of Ocala will host a ceremony for the construction of the Mary Sue Rich Community Center at Reed Place.

It will serve as a hub for the community. The community center will include designated indoor space for senior, youth and family programs; a banquet/event space; fitness equipment and indoor walking track; two full basketball courts; a library and multi-purpose studio rooms.

The ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Thursday.

9. Rolex 24 race to be held at Daytona International Speedway

North America’s “most prestigious sports car race” will be held at Daytona International Speedway to open the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.

The Rolex 24 race will start on Jan. 30 and end on Jan. 31.
