97-year-old woman struck by FHP trooper's vehicle dies

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A 97-year-old woman who was hit by a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper's car in Daytona Beach Wednesday has died, troopers said Thursday night.
 
According to investigators, Maria McCewen was walking from a car parked in the lot of the Walgreens store on Atlantic Avenue when the trooper's car struck her, knocking her to the ground.
 
McCewen was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center with a serious leg injury, according to troopers.
 
Witnesses told Channel 9 that they were speaking with the woman while they waited for an ambulance to arrive.
 
FHP Trooper Gabriel Keyes, of DeLand, was driving the car that struck the woman. Troopers said Keyes was driving less than 5 mph when the accident happened.
 
According to troopers the investigation into the accident will be handled by the FHP troop in Jacksonville.
