Armed robbery suspect shot, killed by Brevard County deputies, investigators say

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Brevard County deputies are investigating a deputy-involved shooting where a man was shot and killed by a deputy.

The shooting Sunday night is one of several involving deputies in recent days.

The most recent happened Sunday night in Brevard County, hours after one in DeLand and three days after one in Deltona.

Deputies were called to the Palms East Apartments about 8 p.m. Sunday on Caroline Street in Cape Canaveral after reports that a man tried robbing another person with a gun, deputies said.

Deputies said a robbery suspect was still in the parking lot armed with a gun when they arrived.

The 911 caller said a man pointed a gun at him and demanded money, but he was able to get away, run inside an apartment and call for help.

Investigators said when they encountered the gunman, he became combative.

“The subject turned on our deputies with the firearm, and our deputies fired to protect themselves and those around him,” said Sheriff Wayne Ivey. “The subject is deceased.”

The alleged gunman died at the scene. His name has not been released.

The deputy who fired the fatal shot is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Residents told Channel 9's Roy Ramos on Monday that they're concerned for their safety after hearing the gunfire just doors down from where they live.

"I heard a little bit of yelling and then I heard six shots, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop," said Charles Sullender. "It could have been a lot worse."
