Bicyclist killed by patrol car in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A Melbourne police officer is on administrative leave following a fatal crash with a bicyclist.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Steve Linthicum, 33, was responding to a call Wednesday night when he hit a man in his 50s. The bicyclist was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the officer did not appear to have on his lights or sirens as he drove to the scene.

FHP is looking into how fast Linthicum was driving and where the bicycle was.

Melbourne police would only say that the officer had been responding to a possible disturbance call.
