Boat hits child, flees scene in Panhandle

CRESTVIEW, Fla. — A 12-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a boat while wading in the water with his father near Camp Timpoochee in the Florida Panhandle.

The crash happened Saturday night.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Stan Kirkland told the Northwest Florida Daily News the boat's driver didn't stop after hitting the child.

Kirkland says the boy's father was cast netting mullet when the crash happened. As he was bringing the child to shore, a good Samaritan called 911. The child was airlifted to a hospital.

The wildlife agency is asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call Wildlife Alert at 888-404-3922.
