ORANGE CITY, Fla. - A woman was found dead in her Florida home after an inmate in Virginia told police he might have harmed someone in Orange City, according to a news release.

Matthew Barber, 49, of Orange City was arrested in Hillsville, Virginia after a vehicle pursuit on Sunday, police said. Barber was arrested on charges of DWI, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, hit-and-run, reckless driving, disregarding police commands, vandalism and obstruction of justice, police said.

While incarcerated, Barber made statements to Virginia Corrections staff that he “may have harmed” a resident at an Orange City address, according to the release.

Virginia authorities contacted Orange City police, who went to the home on Enterprise Drive to check on the resident.

Police said they found the body of Hilda Bailey, 58, in the hallway of the home.

Detectives said Bailey’s death was not a random act. The cause of her death has not been released.

Barber remains jailed in Virginia without bail.

Police say Matthew Barber has been arrested seven times in Orange City, the earliest dating back to 2011 when he was arrested for grand theft.

The suspect’s brother told Eyewitness News said Barber has bipolar disorder.
