• Both lanes of I-95 reopened in Melbourne

    Updated:

MELBOURNE, Fla. - The northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 95 are reopened Tuesday night after being shut down for hours in both directions between the Pineda Causeway and Eau Gallie due to downed power lines in Melbourne that caused a fire.

Florida Power and Light had been working on the downed power lines near exit 183. FPL said a high transmission powerline fell on top of a smaller line.

Brevard County Fire Rescue and FPL were working on the scene and advising caution in the area.

FPL said it had been working to restore power to two customers, and everyone else's power has been restored. At the peak of the outage, 1,000 people were without power.

FPL said it is not sure what caused the main line to fall across the smaller one, but workers are trying to figure it out and make repairs as soon as possible.
