Brevard Co. man led police, helicopter on high-speed chase, officials say

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Brevard County man led officers on an hour-long pursuit that took police and sheriff's deputies across half of the county, officials said.

Investigators said 18-year-old Khallid Highsmith stole a pickup truck and headed south on Interstate 95 until a sheriff's helicopter caught up with him.

Deputies said an eyewitness first spotted the stolen truck, realized it belonged to his boss and followed the truck while calling for help.

Highsmith, who doesn't have a driver's license, led police through neighborhoods in Rockledge and Cocoa, police said.

Police backed off their patrol cars to allow the sheriff's helicopter to follow from above.

Moments later, Highsmith bailed out of the car along with two other teenagers, police said.

Highsmith was sentenced to three days in jail for a similar crime last December. He is accused of violating his probation twice since that arrest.

If he's convicted in this second case, the judge could resentence him for the first arrest and give him more time.
