Here’s what Brevard parents can expect from new discipline policies, interim superintendent

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — With a promise of consequences for disruptive behavior, Brevard Public Schools families may want to take the winter break to review district policy.

On Tuesday, school leaders discussed what students and parents can expect when they return after the new year.

After the first of the year, principals will have more leeway in their own schools. Deputy superintendents have cleared the way for principals to suspend students up to five days. There’s also the opportunity to have more management over discipline at the individual school level.

The district also plans to ban disruptive cell phone use during instructional time.

“Right now Brevard is on the forefront of having this conversation because we know districts all over the state and all over the country are having the same issues,” said Anthony Colucci, president of the Brevard Federation of Teachers.

Brevard Public Schools is having its discussion as newly elected school board members and an interim superintendent take on leadership roles. The district approved Dr. Robert Schiller as the new interim superintendent.

“My next goal is to help the board work toward their priorities and objectives that they want me to focus on and to do an analysis of the district,” he said. “My whole intent is to get it ready for a terrific, seamless handoff to whoever becomes their permanent superintendent.”
