Palm Bay honors officers killed during hostage standoff 35 years ago

PALM BAY, Fla. — Palm Bay remembered two officers Thursday who were shot and killed in the line of duty during a mass shooting in 1987.

The mayor and Palm Bay police chief gathered with members of the community to remember officers Ronald Grogan and Gerald Johnson.

The officers were honored during a memorial and wreath laying ceremony.

Police officials said due to the heroic actions by these two officers, and others, several lives were saved that day.

Saturday marks 35 years since the officers responded to a shooting and hostage situation.

The shooter shot and killed them both, along with four other people.

The shooter died of natural causes while on death row.
