Playgrounds are gone, but parks aren’t closing, Palm Bay officials say

PALM BAY, Fla. — Last month, the city of Palm Bay removed playground equipment from four city parks. However, officials are reassuring residents that it does not mean the parks are closing.

The city’s Parks and Recreation department sent out a clarification on Tuesday letting residents know that the parks – Liberty Park on Carlyle Avenue, Oakwood Park on Koutnik Road, Riviera Park on Riviera Drive and Veterans Memorial Park on Port Malabar Boulevard – will remain open.

The city said an inspection in December determined that the playground equipment at those parks was outdated and beyond a useful lifespan.

Officials are reviewing recent survey results to see what types of playground features and facilities residents prefer. The city said it is now reviewing those responses and considering possible playground replacement options.

The city encouraged residents to visit remaining playgrounds nearby at Inspiration Park on Consumer Street, Arc Park on Riviera Drive and at the Tony Rosa Community Center on Port Malabar Boulevard.
