Brevard mother arrested in shaken baby case

MERRITT ISALND, Fla. — A 20-year-old Merritt Island woman faces aggravated child abuse charges after her 11-week-old child suffered a traumatic brain injury.

The Brevard County Sheriff's office said Victoria Constance Bennett and her husband brought the unresponsive child to the hospital on Jan. 3.

The child was transferred to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, where doctors determined the injuries were consistent with "shaken baby syndrome."

Officials say the baby is suffering from seizures and partial paralysis.

According to an arrest report, Bennett became frustrated when the baby wouldn't eat or stop crying.

Florida Today reports Bennett was released from jail on community supervision, following a first appearance hearing on Tuesday.
