Broward deputy shoots machete-wielding man

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. — A Broward Sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man who had allegedly threatened a woman with a machete.

The shooting occurred Sunday night during a traffic stop in a Marathon Gas station parking lot in Pompano Beach.

Sheriff's officials say the woman approached a deputy to report that a man had threatened her with a machete. She pointed him out to the deputy. The man drove away in a truck with its headlights off.

The deputy tried to stop the vehicle.

Homicide investigators say they are trying to determine what happened. But they say the deputy perceived a threat and fired multiple shots. The man's truck crossed a street and hit a tree. Deputies say the machete was inside.

The man's name has not been released.
