CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. - A man was shot and killed by Citrus County deputies and a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol Sunday morning after they said he pointed a gun at them.
The incident began at 9 a.m. in Marion County when deputies said they received reports of a man with a high-power rifle shooting at Sabal Pipeline equipment and the pipeline in the 12500 block of Highway 200 in Dunnellon.
The accused shooter left the area, and a pursuit began into Citrus County on Highway 200, deputies said. Citrus County deputies, Marion County deputies and troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were involved in the pursuit, deputies said.
An FHP trooper spotted the man's 2016 Chevrolet pickup on U.S. Highway 41, south of Florida Park Drive in Floral City, troopers said. The trooper said he completed a precision immobilization technique that forced the vehicle to stop.
The man then fired his weapon at troopers and Citrus County deputies, and was shot and killed by Citrus County deputies and a trooper who has been with the department for four years, investigators said.
The man’s name has not been released.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is standard procedure.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said it will not release the officers’ names pending the FDLE investigation.
"We know that the suspect was armed and extremely dangerous, and pending the examination of the evidence at the scene, we will be able to determine what other weapons he had in his possession at the time of the shooting. Fortunately, none of our Citrus County Deputies, Marion County Deputies or Florida Highway Patrol Troopers were injured as a result of this crime," said Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast in a news release.
