Construction worker finds human skull on Florida Hospital DeLand's site

DELAND, Fla. — According to a Florida Hospital email, a construction worker found a human skull while working on Florida Hospital DeLand's additional cardiac catheterization lab.

The hospital was built more than 50 years ago and it is believed that these remains are from an indigent cemetery that was in the area about 100 years ago, officials said.

When the skull was found, Florida Hospital DeLand said it halted construction and contacted the authorities to report the incident.

Hospital officials said they were issued a "stop work order" on construction by the county as police investigate the issue.

Officials said a state archeologist is going to take control of the remains.

Florida Hospital's property is next to Charnel Cemetery, which was a burial site for the poor.

WFTV was told officials will attempt to identify relatives and turn the remains over to them.

However, that could prove difficult because the people who were buried at the cemetery often had no family to take care of funeral proceedings.
