No ID on man fatally shot during standoff with authorities in Longwood

LONGWOOD, Fla. — There is still no word on the name of a man who was shot and killed during a standoff with law enforcement in Longwood on Monday.

A woman called authorities to report her estranged husband was high on drugs and suicidal and left their home with a rifle after showing up unexpectedly, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

Seminole County deputies and Longwood police responded to the call and said the man was holed up at a Longwood Store It storage facility on SR-434.

Ultimately, the standoff ended when the suspect pointed his rifle and opened fire on Longwood officers and seminal deputies.

“We tried to engage the suspect with less-lethal munitions and at three occasions, (he) pointed his rifle at officers and there was an exchange of gunfire,” said Officer Kevin Tuck of the Longwood Police Department.

Police said they felt threatened and were forced to shoot the man, killing him.

Due to proximity to a school, Rocklake Middle School was placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Officers said the man was shot by law enforcement, and was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

“Sounds like a terrible situation all the way around,” said witness Kevin Drymala. “Sounds like he had a death wish. Sixty cops against one guy.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation but has not yet released the name of the suspect or what agency shot him.
