Almost 650 beachgoers stung by jellyfish in Volusia County in 2 days

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Almost 650 people were stung by jellyfish Sunday and Monday at beaches in Volusia County, Volusia County Beach Safety said.

A total of 250 people were stung Sunday and an additional 397 people were stung Monday, bringing the total to about 2,450 stings in 10 days, Capt. Andrew Ethridge said.

"If you are stung by a jellyfish, exit the water and flag down a lifeguard truck or go to a staffed tower," he said.

Lifeguards can rinse stings with vinegar, which is a common treatment, Ethridge said.

"It is important to not rub the area, which can make it worse," he said. "While jellyfish stings are painful, most are not life-threatening."

Officials said 12 people were rescued from the ocean Sunday and 11 people were rescued Monday.
