Bike Week sparks crashes, delays on Volusia Co. roads

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Bike Week is wreaking havoc on the on the roads in Volusia County.

Part of the I4 eastbound near the New Smyrna Beach and Deland interchange was shut down for several hours Sunday due to a crash.

The crash caused major backups in the area.

And just after 12 a.m. Saturday a biker from Massachusetts was killed when he slammed into a utility pole on North Causeway near Riverside Drive.

Caution tape and flowers marked the area where the rider lost his life. Police believe alcohol played a factor in the crash.

Another motorcycle crash in Ormond Beach is under investigation.

Police said the driver and passenger of a three-wheeled motorcycle were injured around 10 p.m. Saturday in a crash on North U.S. 1 and Airport Road.

The driver was admitted to the hospital and listed in stable condition. The passenger suffered head injuries.

Both were wearing helmets, police said.

Since the kickoff of Bike Week, officers have remained posted at the busiest intersections to look out for drunk bikers and to keep everyone safe.
