DeLand mother finds KKK flier in bag with candy

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A concerned mother contacted Channel 9 after finding a Ku Klux Klan flier in the front yard of her DeLand home.

The woman said the flier, which invited residents to join the hate group, was found in her Voorhis Avenue yard in plastic bag.

"It's concerning because why did you come to this neighborhood?" the woman said.

The woman said the bag that contained the flier also had candy in it that her children wanted to eat.

"And when they found them, they wanted to eat the candy and what I did, I'm like, 'Well, where did this candy come from?'" she said.

Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said it was the second time KKK fliers have been found in the county during 2014.

Authorities said fliers were also found at nearby Dunns Bottom Park, which is in a predominantly black neighborhood. Those bags were collected to be further investigated, authorities said.

In January, 9 Investigates dug into the growing number of KKK members across the state and how the group is recruiting even more.
