Deputies: Brevard County Jail deputy arrested for stealing money from inmate

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A 29-year-old Brevard County corrections deputy was fired Friday morning after stealing money from an inmate, Brevard County Sheriff's Office said.

Felicia Renee Brown, who was was hired in December 2013, was arrested for stealing less than $100 from an inmate’s release account, Sheriff's Office spokesman Tod Goodyear said.

An investigation was launched on Nov. 14 after an account clerk discovered a discrepancy in an inmate’s release account, Goodyear said. The inmate also contacted the jail to notify officials that the money hadn't been received, he said.

Investigators said that the corrections deputy overseeing releases neglected to provide the inmate his or her funds on a debit card, which is standard procedure.

"Allegedly, Brown noticed that the funds were available and disbursed the funds on a debit card that she took, making unauthorized purchases at four stores in the Titusville area," Goodyear said. "Brown was captured on business surveillance recordings making some of the purchases."

Brown was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, scheme to defraud, petit theft, official misconduct, criminal use of personal information and false entries in books of a business entity.

She's being jailed in lieu of a $30,000 bail.
