Deputies: Man arrested after ramming pickup into jail gate

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla.,None — Deputies in Volusia County released surveillance video that shows a man ramming his pickup truck into a gate at the county branch jail early Friday morning.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. at the jail off International Speedway Boulevard in Daytona Beach.

Deputies said the driver of a red Toyota Tundra, 22-year-old Joseph Carrara, smashed through an exterior security gate at the jail, then drove around the grounds and broke out another section of the fence.

Deputies said they were alerted when a corrections officer noticed the bright red pickup truck speeding away.

Carrara may have evaded deputies, but about 15 miles away from the jail, the Sheriff's Office said he almost hit a deputy who was patrolling in the DeLand area. That deputy then called for backup after he pulled over Carrara and realized he was driving the pickup the Volusia County Sheriff's Office was seeking.

Carrara was arrested on charges of felony criminal mischief, DUI and possession of a controlled substance for the prescription drugs deputies found in the truck, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Officials said no inmates escaped from the facility.
