Deputies: Man who killed mother, dog says YouTube videos made him feel paranoid

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A 22-year-old man walked to a Marion County Sheriff's Office district office Wednesday morning to tell deputies he had killed his mother and his dog before setting their house near Ocklawaha on fire, the agency said.

Deputies said firefighters were called shortly before 3:30 a.m. to a burning home on Southeast 53rd Street near Southeast 49th Street Road and County Road 314A.

Investigators said firefighters discovered a body in the charred home more than three hours after being called to the fire.

Detectives said Colby Glen Larue walked to the Sheriff's Office's district office in Ocala National Forest, where he told a deputy he had killed his mother, Angela Limbaugh.

Larue told investigators that while watching YouTube videos Tuesday evening, he grew paranoid that someone would rape or harm his mother, an arrest affidavit said.

The affidavit said he grabbed a shotgun, but it was not working, so he grabbed a handgun and began pacing on the ground floor of the home.

Limbaugh was awakened and walked downstairs, where Larue said he shot Limbaugh and his bulldog in the head twice each, the affidavit said.

"Larue advised he killed his mother because he was protecting her from individuals who were supposedly coming to harm her," the report said.

Larue told detectives that he ignited his mattress with a lighter, boarded a boat in the backyard and rowed across a lake to a bonfire at another home, where he was told to leave before he ran shirtless into a wooded area, the affidavit said.

Detectives said Larue told them that he walked to a Winn-Dixie grocery store and asked a homeless man wearing an eye patch for a shirt before walking to the district office, where he surrendered to deputies.

Brittany Grant told Channel 9 on Thursday that Larue approached their home after rowing to their dock before the fire.

"He just slowly starts walking up, and it was like Michael Myers," she said. "We didn't even see him nor knew that he was even here until he got to the truck."

She said her boyfriend, Corey Ball, grabbed a golf club and ran toward Larue to ask him who he was and why he was on their property.

"He was, like, 'I'm Colby! I'm Colby!'" Grant said. "He came up, and he was, like, 'I'm just trying to figure out my life, man.'"

She said when they saw flames engulf the home, Ball ran toward the fire to try to extinguish it.

Residents told Ball that Limbaugh was still in the home.

"I couldn't get to it. It was so hot. You could start to feel your hairs starting to singe," he said. "You're just helpless. There's nothing you can do about that."

Larue was booked into the Marion County Jail on charges of first-degree arson of a dwelling and homicide. He is being held without bail.

Records said Larue has no prior criminal history.

The death and the fire remain under investigation.
