Deputies shoot woman who fled traffic stop, attempted to bring gun into hospital, officials say

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — A woman was shot by deputies after she fled a traffic stop and tried to carry a gun into a local hospital, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies said they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Southwest College Road. They said the driver, identified as Yailisse Canizares, 22, refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated.

During the pursuit, Canizares called 911 and stated she was suicidal and going to AdventHealth Ocala, deputies said.

Deputies said Canizares was armed and had a gun to her head.

When Canizares arrived at the hospital, deputies told her to stay in her car. She exited her car while carrying a gun and ran toward the hospital’s entrance.

Deputies said they continued to command her to stop but she refused.

A deputy then shot Canizares.

Deputies said she is being treated at a hospital, where she is in critical condition.

Canizares is charged with felony offenses, including fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer (while armed with a firearm) and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.

Deputies said Canizares was on pretrial release for possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The name of the deputy involved has not been released at this time.
