Man hit, killed by hit-and-run driver while changing tire on US-192

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The search is on for the vehicle that struck and killed a man alongside an Osceola County highway Thursday night.

The crash shut down U.S. 192 for several hours, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said. The crash happened just before 7:30 p.m. on U.S. 192 and Hibiscus Road.

Troopers said Gerald Watson, 57, of Palm Bay was changing his tire when he was struck in the westbound lanes.

According to troopers, Watson's wife was sitting in their Volkwagen Passat when her husband was struck.

Troopers said Watson was thrown about 50 feet by the impact.

Watson was hit while it was still light outside but his wife did not get a good look at the car that struck him, troopers said.

She said the sun guard was blocking her view.

Troopers said they have no evidence to suggest what type of vehicle it was. They said it could be a larger truck with a grille guard on the front.
